    Gaiman vs McFarlane: Miracleman liberated?

For those of you who care, Todd McFarlane has been soundly dismissed in the big Spawn/Miracleman legal fiasco. I read about this on Slashdot, but ICV2 has the whole scoop.

Could this mean that the long lost Miracleman chapters will finally see the light of day? Let's hope so.

As for the fruity "photo" of Miracleman, I stumbled across this rather troubling website while searching Google images. That's some wacky stuff!

    But wrong. Very wrong indeed.

    FYI: MMMS goes MMORPG

    Nuff said.

Well, maybe not quite 'nuff. For many years the super-hero genre has been sadly neglected by video game designers. Perhaps the complex interactions and vast array of powers needed has been too daunting a task until modern years, but all I know is every superhero game to date (with rare exceptions) has sucked badly. Let's hope today's link will lead to some serious clobberin' time.

For those who just can't wait for rock-em sock-em super battles, have you tried Heroclix yet? All the violence without the high system requirements. You don't even need a computer!

The marvel set was a big hit, and the new DC Hypertime expansion has just arrived in the store, and looks terrific! It's a whole new way to kill time!

    are you ykk compliant?

When's the last time you XYZ'd? That is, really examined your zippers? Every noticed how many of them say YKK on them? Today's link delves into the terrible reality of one of the largest fastener manufacturers in the world today. They are quite literally holding the fabric of society together!

Have you been hepped to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen yet? If not, consider the all new trade paperback collection of their first 6-part adventure. At only $14.95 it's a dilly of a deal for this long sold-out series, previously available only in hardcover (if you could find it). This is one of Alan Moore's greatest creations, and comes with my highest reccomendation. If you've ever read and loved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, HG Welles, Edgar Alan Poe or Jonathan Swift then you're in for a treat. And if you haven't, it's still a great read.

The web is just abuzz with infolicious tidbits about the LoEG movie, writtent by James "Starman" Robinson, and starring none other than James Bond himself, Sean Connery. Although the rumors about adding Tom Sawyer to make it more yank-accessible seem a bit scary, hopes remain high. I just hope it's not as far from the source material as From Hell was...

    what's the opposite of extreme?

Normally I dislike anything that's billed as extreme. I guess it's the old curmudgeon in me, but skysurfing and bungie jumping look pretty damn boring to me. On the other hand california extreme looks pretty damn cool to me. I was initially hipped to this by the infamous Steve, (a familiar name to old school customers here) but it was just linked on slashdot, so now everybody will know about it.

All those games you remember so fondly will be available for free play! Not just video games, but also my own personal favorite: pinball! If anyone out there has a Fish Tails or Banzai Run fetish like mine, you must attend!

Speaking of attendance, the giant Hijinx Comics 20th Anniversary Grand Opening Extravaganza was a rousing success! Many thanks to all who attended, same time next year!

    labor day of love sale

The crackerjack Hijinx Comics staff is busy making last minute preparations for our monstrous Labor Day Sale. Yes, you too can honor the onset of organized labor unions by participating in the most hotly anticipated event in Willow Glen, if not San Jose, if not the ENTIRE UNIVERSE!!

things you may see at the sale:

    • 25 cent comics!
    • up to 50% off sports card boxes!
    • juggling chimpanzees! on stilts!*
    • the amazing flex tunes!
I'm a little stressed out with all the last minute preparations, so that angry picture of Reggie Mantle is supposed to represent me. I've never really grokked Archie comics, but I can definitely dig the old groovy Dan DeCarlo artwork! Archie is still a player in the comics biz. In fact, they're the only company that still has a presence in supermarkets and drugstores, where the casual shopper still sees them next to Soap Opera Digest and TV Guide.

    * chimps may be subject to replacement by JK playing Todd Rundgren albums

    hump day

Ever since I was a kid, wednesday has been my favorite weekday. Half the week is over, and the weekend is in sight. To top it all off, wednesday is new comics day!

Comics used to come on Fridays, with a partial shipment on Tuesday. That blew major chunks because nobody knew what was coming out when. There have been rumblings about changing days again, but I hope they don't. Lots of people revolve their week around new comics day, and the slightest change can catch them off guard.

That being said, comics will ship on Thursday next week (9/4/2002) because of Labor Day. Plan accordingly...

    adventures on ebay

I've decided to make my first foray into online auctions. It's getting rather addictive! There's something way cool about the economic meritocracy in effect. I use ebay all the time now as a great estimator of "street price". I don't care what the price guides say, some things won't sell at any price. As an experiment, I'm selling some baseball cards and stuff: Happy bidding!

    Review: Birds of Prey pilot

One of my secret sources (thanks B) has delivered me a VCD of the unaired pilot to the new Birds of Prey series. This version features Sharilyn Fenn as a foxy Harley Quinn. When the real version airs, Fenn will be replaced by the series regular. I fast forwarded through much of it, but was surprised how much I saw of Batman and Batgirl in costume, kicking butt. A few minor issues:
    • Black Canary is now a 15 year old psychic runaway.
    • For some reason the Huntress has cat and bat-like super powers, even though her parents had none.
    • The Joker looks like Jay Leno in pancake makeup.
If this is not enough to scare you off, judge for yourself...

    Review: Signs

I saw Signs by M. Night Shyamalan today. While I admired it as a tight Hitchcockian (Hitchcockesque?) thriller, it lacked some punch in the final analysis. Basically, earth is invaded by the wussiest alien race in the universe. They can travel through intersteller space, but haven't quite mastered the skills needed to escape a kitchen pantry. They can leap 20 feat and squirt poison gas, yet you could kill them all with a super-soaker. You'd think they'd be smart enough to bring parkas to a planet that's mostly covered in water.

It was exciting, but the ending is a letdown, and nowhere near as inspiring as it is meant to be. Mel Gibson is good, Joaquin Phoenix is funny, and McCaully Culkin's little brother does a good job too. The little girl steals every scene she's in, and adds a lot of humor to the film. It gets a solid B+, but I expect much more from M.
